No, your mom did not teach you how to clean a showerhead. Probably, in your entire childhood and young adulthood in her house, you never saw her clean it even once. But you are supposed to be better than your parents, live a much better life than them and I dare say that a clean showerhead is a good place to start.
Showerheads get slimy-dirty inside

How long have you had the same showerhead? Be prepared to make your hands dirty for a dirty showerhead can get slimy-dirty. You will not like it but when it is clean, you will be glad you did it. Just because the jet of hot water splashing on your torso looks clean, it does not mean that it is free of bacteria, which are invisible to the naked eye. With Dunn’s Laboratory at North Carolina State University investigating showerhead microbial habitation, it seems there are germ reasons for you to get worried if you do not clean your showerhead.
Dunn’s Laboratory has since inception been seeking to know more about colonies of bacteria that thrive on human skin. It also investigates bacteria that live in our day-to-day living spaces like the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and elsewhere. This alone tells you that there are bacteria everywhere you look around, including on your skin.
Cleanliness may not be the only reason why you need a new showerhead

The traditional showerhead can be quite hard to clean, by default. Thus, you need to get a new one and there is more reason why you ought to buy a new one now. If you have a showerhead that spouts water at the rate of 2.5 gallons per minute, you are not doing your pockets much good because it wastes too much hot water. Now, consider that such a high flow showerhead not only depletes your pocket, but that it also harbors bacteria. If you need to change your hard-to-clean showerhead, then you had better replace it with a good, water and energy-saving showerhead.
Back to the Showerhead Microbiome Project that recruited volunteers to take part in the project and sent sampling kits to people in the US and Europe and it took a few minutes. The partakers of this project were just required to rub a cotton swab on onto the inner part of their showerheads and then use paper strips to determine the pH, nitrate, iron and chlorine quantity in their water. The swabs would then be sent to Dunn to process and determine the kind of bacteria that is in your showerhead, and send you a report back. Well, you can be sure of one thing, and that is that you will not love the report.
One of the things that the researchers will be looking at in some of the sample swabs is to determine the presence of non-tuberculosis mycobacteria (N.T.M), which causes lung diseases in people who have poor immunity. Jennifer Honda who is a microbiologist with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is carrying out this particular area of study. The NTM bacteria is most likely to exist in wet conditions, particularly in showerheads that have no time to dry between uses.
The research is two way pronged in that Dunn seeks to find out what helpful microbiome can be found in the showerhead and Jennifer is trying to find the harmful bacteria – N.T.M. By the look of things, it seems there are more harmful than useful bacteria in the showerhead. So you need to buy an easy-to-clean showerhead.
Organic has become, or we can say has been the fad for some time now. However, it has been mainly domain of the food industry. Today, it has found itself in beddings and clothing. You may have noticed that many retailers now offer organic blankets, bed sheets and towels. And no, this is not a ploy to appear to be doing the right thing, but there really is a market for organic products. If you do not have your organic bed sheets yet, it is time to go organic.
While everyone understands the importance of eating organic food, not many people understand why organic linen for the bedroom could be important. Because of the price difference too between the nonorganic and organic linen, many people cannot help wondering whether they are worth all the fuss that they generate.
Quality vs. quantity

This is the battle of the titans in the market, with some people looking for high thread count for quality fabrics. However, experts say that high quantity of the thread count is good, but even more important is the quality of the thread used. The organic fabrics offer the latter – quality. In the market, you will find that organic fabrics are usually made of organic hemp or cotton. However, with hemp having been declared illegal to grow in the USA, you can as well start looking for cotton material. However, even that, while most people have seen cotton growing in the farms, well, it may not be entirely organic considering that it is a highly sprayed crop every year. Organic means that it has grown without being sprayed with insecticides.
The chemical fertilizers and pesticides used on cotton are some of the materials used to make chemical weapons for war. That means that if you use cotton bed sheets and they have traces of these chemicals, well, you could be on your way to a nasty health shock, and that is something that you really do not want. Thus, you should find out how you can tell organically grown cotton from conventionally grown ones. Look for the words “Organically Certified” on the label and you can be sure that you have found cotton that has been grown free of chemicals. It will cost more, but it will be worth it.
Organic bed linen is great on your skin

So now we know that the cost of the organic bed sheets will be high, what are some of the benefits? When you use the inorganic bed sheets, you will find they stay wrinkle-free, but then while organic fiber may crease, it is much softer and friendlier to the skin and do help one to avoid skin allergies like eczema. This also makes these sheets good for babies’ skin.
While you may worry about the high cost, consider the value of the items that you will be buying. It is much like buying a low flow shower head at a low cost and then get many years of service out of it. You will get many years of use out of organic cotton bed sheets.
With the popularity of organic almost hitting sky high, it is now so easy to buy organic products. You can buy them online or walk into the large retailers. You will find what you need there. From duvets to bed sheets and towels, organic has found its way into the bedroom. Your skin will love it and believe it or not, you will be able to sleep much better at night.
